A group of sixth- to ninth-grade students attended a six-week summer learning program at Wor-Wic Community College thanks to a partnership with Horizons Delmarva, a program that provides low-income public school students from Wicomico and Worcester counties with an intensive academic experience that helps foster a love of learning and achievement.

Core academic subjects are the main focus, and students are tested at the beginning and end of the program to measure progress. But fun is part of the curriculum as well; science classes teach chemistry concepts through making rock candy, and students learn math and economics principles through budgeting dream trips, car and home purchases and college tuition.

“We welcome having these students on campus thanks to a Maryland Department of Education grant,” said Dr. Deirdra G. Johnson, dean of enrollment management and student services. “It is a good opportunity for them to become familiar with being at a college, so they can picture themselves in higher education. Certainly, we would love to have Horizons students return as Wor-Wic students one day.”
