Mask receives Wor-Wic faculty honors scholarship

Tifanee Mask of Berlin, an honors student at Wor-Wic Community College, is this year’s $500 faculty honors scholarship winner.

Selection is based on scholastic achievement and an essay competition judged by the honors program committee at Wor-Wic. Mask’s award-winning essay called "Faking News, Not Breaking News," argued that it's foolish to assume that fake news is a new phenomenon when in actuality it's a rebirth of 19th century yellow journalism and other versions of fake news that came before that. “We've seen this before, we just came up with a new name for it,” Mask said.

A straight-A student, Mask says she was drawn to the honors program because it offered a challenge and because professors who teach honors classes hold students to a higher standard, knowing what honors students are academically capable of. After completing her general studies degree at Wor-Wic, Mask plans to transfer to a four-year institution to obtain a bachelor’s degree in history, with a master’s to follow.
