Since Wor-Wic Community College began a driver education program in January of 2014, 191 students have passed through the doors and 115 of those students received tuition assistance. Many students were adults who needed a license to be able to drive to work.
“My favorite success story is Charlotte Matthews, a 43 year-old Ivory Coast native who moved here from New York City, where she didn’t need to drive,” said Carol Moody, lead driver education instructor. “She attended our class in October of 2015, received her license in January of 2016, and called to let us know she had passed. She thanked us for helping her.”
“I had to depend on my husband for transportation,” explained Matthews. “When we separated, the need for a license became paramount. My daughter’s teacher told me about the program at Wor-Wic and the behind-the-wheel instructor gave me the confidence I needed.”
Even though her first language was French, after taking the course, she was able to pass the driving test with an 88 percent.
Driver education training at Wor-Wic has been made possible, in part, by donations from the Pohanka Automotive group of Salisbury, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, First Shore Federal and Walmart. Wor-Wic’s driver education course is approved by the Motor Vehicle Administration.
