Adam Tavel, associate professor of English at Wor-Wic Community College, was selected as the winner of the Permafrost book prize in poetry, for his book, “Plash & Levitation.”
The prize is awarded by the literary journal, Permafrost, a graduate student-run journal associated with the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and offers publication of a book length collection of poems, $1,000 and distribution through University of Alaska Press.
Tavel submitted his manuscript in an open contest. The staff of the Permafrost journal, along with graduate students who served as readers, screened hundreds of submissions and sent a small pool of finalists to the guest judge, Heid E. Erdrich. Erdrich is author of four poetry collections, most recently “Cell Traffic: New and Selected Poems.”
Tavel received the 2010 Robert Frost Award and is the author of “The Fawn Abyss” and the chapbook, “Red Flag Up.” His recent poems appear in “The Massachusetts Review” and “Passages North.”
Tavel received a bachelor’s degree in historical communications from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Penn., a master’s degree in English language and literature from the University of Toledo (Ohio) and a master’s degree in creative writing from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
