Wor-Wic Community College recently received an “Environmental Excellence Award” from Cenergistic (formerly Energy Education) in recognition of the success of the college’s energy-saving program and for outstanding environmental and financial resource stewardship.
Since entering into a partnership with Cenergistic almost three years ago, Wor-Wic reduced energy consumption by about 20 percent and saved $540,161 in energy costs. In addition, the college has saved 21,006 MMBTU, which is the equivalent of 2,493 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions being prevented, 448 passenger cars taken off of the road for one year or 63,772 pine trees grown for 10 years.
“Reaching this level of savings at this stage of the program is a significant achievement. Wor-Wic has done an excellent job of implementing Cenergistic’s organizational behavior-based approach to energy conservation and maintaining productive efforts at all levels of the organization,” said Dr. William S. Spears, chairman and founder of Cenergistic.
“We are pleased with our continued ability to reduce the college’s energy consumption, lessen our impact on the environment and save on energy costs. The savings allows Wor-Wic to redirect the dollars that would have been spent on energy to other priorities, which is crucial in this down economy,” said Dr. Ray Hoy, president of Wor-Wic. “The sustained success of this energy-saving program would not be possible without the concerted efforts made by each and every employee at the college.”
The energy conservation program at Wor-Wic involves preserving comfortable environments during class and scheduled activities while saving on costs associated with using electricity and natural gas. Energy-saving practices include making sure that energy is not wasted in classrooms, offices, hallways and kitchens, and that heating and air conditioning systems are running optimally. To ensure progress, periodic energy audits are conducted to track and analyze the college’s energy consumption patterns, and to identify and correct areas that need improvement. In addition, employees are encouraged to practice smart energy strategies and use energy wisely.
