Wor-Wic Community College was named as one of the top Military Friendly Schools for 2013 by G.I. Jobs, a veteran-owned magazine designed for military personnel transitioning into civilian life.

The Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students. The 1,739 higher education institutions on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.

Wor-Wic recognizes and adheres to Veterans Administration (VA) standards and strives to assist veterans as much as possible. Fred Howard, financial aid scholarship and veterans coordinator, is available at Wor-Wic to help current and prospective students who are veterans or active military personnel.

“Since the fall of 2005, more than 800 Wor-Wic students have used the GI Bill while attending Wor-Wic,” said Howard. “After the Post 9/11 GI Bill was passed by Congress in the summer of 2009, we began to see an increase in veterans attending Wor-Wic. Last year, more than 300 veterans were enrolled at Wor-Wic.”

A U.S. Navy veteran, Howard serves as the advisor for the veterans and military association at Wor-Wic, a student club that is open to all students who have served any length of time in the U.S. armed forces. The club raises awareness of veteran issues and organizes events pertaining to veterans.

Now in its fourth year, the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools was compiled through research and a data-driven survey of student veterans from more than 12,000 VA-approved schools nationwide. The methodology and criteria for creating the list were developed with the assistance of an academic advisory board consisting of educators from schools across the country.
