Wor-Wic Community College students Jimmy Staley and Taren Nance of Salisbury were recently named to the All-Maryland Academic Team, a competition that recognizes academic excellence and community service of two-year college students.
The annual competition is sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society (PTK), the Maryland Association of Community Colleges and the Maryland Council of Community College Chief Executive Officers. Selection is based on college transcripts, letters of recommendation, a biographical questionnaire and an essay. Twenty-nine students from throughout the state were named to either the first or second team.
Jimmy Staley
Staley was one of 14 students to make the first team. Nance was one of 15 students who made the second team.
“In the past 18 years, Wor-Wic has had 15 students make the first team and 11 named to the second team,” said Dr. Ray Hoy, president of Wor-Wic.
Staley, an honors student with a 3.81 grade point average (GPA), expects to graduate from Wor-Wic in May with an associate degree in general studies. After graduation, he plans to transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
He is Wor-Wic’s student government association (SGA) treasurer. Staley recently served as the Maryland state president for the PTK (Phi Theta Kappa) Middle States region. He also served as vice president of service for Wor-Wic’s Alpha Nu Omicron chapter of PTK.
Taren Nance
An honors student with a 3.68 GPA, Nance is working on his associate degree in elementary education/generic special education PreK-12 transfer at Wor-Wic. He plans to obtain a bachelor’s degree in education at a four-year college or university.
Nance was recently elected as president of the PTK Middle States region. He is also the vice president of leadership for Wor-Wic’s PTK chapter and a student ambassador.
Nance’s poem, “Fragments of a Broken Mirror,” was the first place winner in the Maryland Career Development Association’s “Dreams Come True” poetry contest this past fall.
