After 36 years of dedicated service as a member of the Wor-Wic Community College board of trustees, Robert M. Lawrence of Salisbury recently stepped down.
Lawrence has served on the board since the college was founded in 1975. He chaired the college’s board of trustees for 12 years — the longest of any member — from 1980-83, 1987-89, 1991-97 and 2008-2009.
In 1989, Lawrence chaired a site selection committee to locate property suitable for the construction of a campus for the college.
In 1991, Lawrence spearheaded the creation of the Maryland Association of Community Colleges, which advocates for Maryland’s community colleges and serves as liaison to the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
For his contributions to Wor-Wic and all community colleges throughout the state, Lawrence received the trustee leadership award for the northeast region from the Association of Community College Trustees in 2001.
“Bob’s untiring efforts on behalf of Wor-Wic have improved the quality of life for residents of the Lower Eastern Shore,” said Dr. Ray Hoy, president of Wor-Wic. “He has been an integral part in establishing a firm foundation for the continued growth of the college in the future.”
The owner of Lawrence Services in Salisbury, he received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) and a master’s degree in theology from Beacon Bible College in Columbus, Ga.
