Free Musical Theater Workshop to be Held Aug. 6

Broadway director and choreographer John Carrafa will conduct a free musical theater workshop on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in Room 101 of Guerrieri Hall at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury.

Carrafa was nominated for two Tony awards for choreography for “Into the Woods” in 2001 and “Urinetown” in 2002. In 2005, he directed and choreographed the Broadway production of “Good Vibrations.” Films that Carrafa has also choreographed include “Bride Wars,” “The Other Guys,” “The Polar Express” and “The Thomas Crown Affair.”  In addition to choreographing episodes of “Ugly Betty” and “Sex in the City,” he also choreographed a music tour for Alicia Keys, as well as various operas and commercials.

The workshop will include a warm-up dance exercise, followed by instruction and rehearsal of an opening number and a couple of production numbers from a musical. At the end of the workshop, participants will conduct a short performance of what they learned. Observers are also welcome.

Reservations are required due to limited seating. Participants and observers should bring their own bag lunch.

Funding for the event comes from a Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council grant.
