Wor-Wic Community College was recently awarded a Consolidated Adult Education and Family Literacy Services grant from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation to provide adult education courses to approximately 500 Wicomico County residents.

Grant funding for the program is provided by eight federal and state funding sources. Previously administered by the Maryland State Department of Education, the program transitioned to the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation in 2009.

Denean L. Jones-Ward of Salisbury was recently hired as adult education administrator at Wor-Wic. Jones-Ward received her bachelor’s degree in urban affairs from Boston (Mass.) University and a master’s degree in public administration from Wilmington (Del.) University. Jones-Ward was the adult education and family literacy services coordinator at the state-administered adult education program before joining Wor-Wic.

Through the adult education program, Wor-Wic provides adult basic and secondary education, external diploma, English as a second language, family literacy and English language/civics classes at no cost to students. Morning and evening classes are offered Monday through Thursday. Saturday morning fast-track adult secondary education courses are also available.

Adult education students will also be introduced to the postsecondary opportunities available at Wor-Wic through campus visits and information sessions. Providing these students with basic education skills, while familiarizing them with Wor-Wic, will promote transition into Wor-Wic’s continuing education or credit programs to learn occupational skills, enroll in college-level courses and prepare for employment.

Classes are held at Philmore Commons, located on Phillip Morris Drive in Salisbury. Students interested in registering for classes being offered this fall can call Jones-Ward at (410) 749-3217.
