Registration has begun for Summer Scholars at Wor-Wic Community College. For the best selection of classes, parents of gifted and talented children entering fourth through ninth grade should register prior to June 1.

Fifteen new courses are being offered this summer, including “Lego Robotics – Master Your Mission!,” “Make Your First Video Game!,” “So You Want to Be a Rock Star!,” “Three, Two, One: Blast Off!” and “Crazy for Clothes: Fashion Design 101.”

Other topics include culinary arts, crime scene investigation, green energy, math games, self-expression through art and writing, nursing career exploration, chess, computer animation, digital photography, starting a business, crazy chemistry and weather exploration.

The one-week courses are being offered Monday through Friday, beginning July 12. Students can take full- or half-day courses. Full-day courses will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one-hour lunch. Half-day courses, which are offered from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m., can also be taken back-to-back to create a full-day schedule. Before and after care is available at the college’s on-campus child development center.

The courses are designed for public and private school gifted and talented students entering grades four through nine in the fall of 2010. A student’s gifted and talented status is determined by the school they attend, based on the student’s outstanding abilities in the areas of general intellectual capabilities, specific academic aptitudes, or the creative, visual or performing arts.
