Michael Bazin

Part-Time Instructor

Education

BA, The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, 1985
MAT, 3.93 GPA, 1989 National-Louis University, Evanston, Illinois, 1989
I have also taken dozens of classes and attended and/or participated in many professional conferences, workshops, and activities since.

Work Experience

Wor-Wic Community College: 1994-present (Summer 2020 at time of writing), thus over 26 years.
Philosophy (PHL 101): about 64 sections in various forms (in-class, telecourse, online/in-class hybrid, and all-online, as well as in-class and hybrid converted to all-online due to COVID 19).
English (Eng. 151): 7 sections. Developmental English (Eng. 095): 13 sections; (Eng. 096): 3 sections; (Eng. 086): 2 sections.
Center Instructor (Robinson Reading and Writing Center, Reading, Study Skills, and Testing Center, Writing Center, Testing Center, with some overlapping): about 54 semesters, averaging over 7 hours a week, 1994 to present.
Other Teaching Experience:
Social Studies and Reading Teacher: Grades 6, 7, and 8. North Park Elementary School, Chicago, Illinois, full-time, 1990-1993.
Teacher (all subjects): Grade 6, Pleasant Hill Elementary School, Palatine, Illinois, full-time, 1989-1990.
Other Related Experience:
Various Teaching or Related: Substitute Teacher (all subjects), Assistant (to middle school team), and student teacher (Social Studies)… in Baker Demonstration School, Evanston, Illinois; Brookline School District, Brookline, Massachusetts; and Nichols Middle School, also Brookline, respectively (during parts of 1986-1989).
Buyer for Books on Tape and Classical Music Specialist: Harvard Cooperative Society, Cambridge, Massachusetts, full-time, 1985-1987. I often employ literature and music in my philosophy teaching to connect to themes and/or to period.

Committees

I served on the Wor-Wic Values Committee (working on the college’s “Values” statement, and the value of “diversity” in particular). I also served on committees on security and on planning the Wor-Wic fountain.

Community Service

I designed background art for two plays at the college. While I have no formal community service beyond my teaching (which definitely counts, in my mind), when taking my dog for long walks, I will pick up litter in the partk, the woods, or the S.U. campus, or kick branch debris off the paths in the woods. I also sometimes help people in need in various ways.

Publications

Essay: “Teacher-Consultantant Reflects on Summer Institute 2005,” published in The Scribe, for the Eastern Shore Writing Project. If the college’s literary publication included work by faculty and staff as well as students, I would offer some writings, including haiku and other poems, and photographs.

Presentations

I played the lead part in the play “Judgement Call” (Spring 2007), as well as a minor part in another play. I gave an oral presentation on the ideas of philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre before a performance of a play by him at the college.
