Careers in chemical dependency counseling, social work and education are in high demand due to the opioid epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic. Several new treatment programs for substance abuse have opened on the Eastern Shore, both government operated as well as private sector, creating more opportunities in those fields, while the teaching shortage has reached crisis level according to the Eastern Shore of Maryland Educational Consortium. This has resulted in many opportunities in K-12 education. With parents returning to work post-pandemic, child care needs have surged, creating many openings in child care settings.
