The education and human services pathway is a great program for students interested in teaching, helping and guiding others to better their lives. Counseling and education programs can involve both classroom and practical training or field experience. There are both short-term opportunities to begin work quickly, and long-term certificate and degree options which take several semesters to complete, with some preparing students to transfer to four-year institutions for further study.

This pathway is a great fit for students who:

enjoy helping and working with people,
are good listeners and relate well to others,
find that teaching, supporting and assisting others is part of who they are,
enjoy solving social problems, and
are interested in careers and continued training in fields such as education, counseling, and social services.

Careers and Salary

Careers in chemical dependency counseling, social work and education are in high demand due to the opioid epidemic and COVID-19 pandemic. Several new treatment programs for substance abuse have opened on the Eastern Shore, both government operated as well as private sector, creating more opportunities in those fields, while the teaching shortage has reached crisis level according to the Eastern Shore of Maryland Educational Consortium. This has resulted in many opportunities in K-12 education. With parents returning to work post-pandemic, child care needs have surged, creating many openings in child care settings.

Some of the jobs and salaries below can be obtained with less than two years of study. Others require a bachelor’s degree or more:

Getting Involved

Students in this pathway have many opportunities to be involved in campus life outside of their academic work, including the The Healthy Minds Collective and the Future Educators of America Club.
