Wor-Wic earns FAA designation for drone course

For several years, Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury, in partnership with Sentinel Robotic Solutions, has offered “UAS (Drone) FAA Remote Pilot Cert Prep,” a course that trains participants to fly uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS), or drones, providing them with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in the field of UAS and preparing them to take a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) remote pilot certification exam.

On Sept. 16, the FAA enacted new, stricter regulations on drones. To ensure that Wor-Wic course participants can continue to successfully train in this growing career, the east side of campus has been designated as an approved educational institution and earned the FAA-Recognized Identification Area designation by the FAA.

“This is a massive win for Wor-Wic and our UAS training programs,” said Jason Taylor, director of UAS programs at Sentinel Robotic Solutions and UAS instructor at Wor-Wic. With three decades of experience in drone flying, Taylor plays a vital role in educating the next generation of drone pilots, not only in the adult FAA course, but also in Wor-Wic’s Summer Scholars drone course for elementary and middle-grade children.

Taylor appreciates being part of helping educate students at Wor-Wic. “Firstly, the institution boasts a dedicated and experienced faculty who are at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field. Through partnerships with industry experts, they bring real-world expertise and a passion for innovative technology to the classroom, ensuring that students receive top-notch education,” he said. “Wor-Wic's commitment to affordability and accessibility makes quality education in UAS accessible to a diverse range of students, ensuring that anyone with a passion for this field can pursue their educational and career aspirations.”

The next remote pilot certification and flight training class, offered through Wor-Wic’s continuing education and workforce development division, starts Oct. 2. A spring course starts April 1, 2024, and offers career starters tuition assistance, for which people can apply at worwic.edu/non-credit-scholarships.
