Taren Nance
Taren Nance of Salisbury, an education and business major at Wor-Wic Community College, is this year’s $500 faculty honors scholarship winner.
Selection is based on scholastic achievement and an essay competition judged by the honors program committee at Wor-Wic. Applicants were required to write a four-page research-based argumentative essay that addressed the ethical implications and obligations for students who utilize digital media. Nance’s award-winning essay was called “The 21st Century Plague – Internet.”
An honors student, Nance is currently working on completing an elementary education/generic special education PreK-12 transfer associate degree and a certificate of proficiency in business management at Wor-Wic.
“The honors classes I’m taking have been mind changing,” Nance said. “I’ve had to rethink everything I initially thought. They made me slow up a bit and assess things, and now I’m more open-minded.”
At Wor-Wic, Nance is a member of the African-American mentoring program and the Alpha Nu Omicron chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. He also presented a research project at the Maryland Collegiate Honors Council conference.
“Students have to be responsible and accountable,” Nance said. “My hard work is paying off. I’m taking advantage of the opportunities at Wor-Wic and showing that I really want it.”
Nance plans to graduate from Wor-Wic in a couple of years and then transfer to a four-year university to major in education.
