Sen. Mathias to Address 2011 graduates

Maryland Senator James N. "Jim" Mathias Jr. will address the 2011 Wor-Wic Community College graduates at commencement on Wednesday, May 11, at 7 p.m., at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in Salisbury.

Mathias has been a member of the Senate since January. He serves on the finance committee and on the joint subcommittee on program open space and agricultural land preservation. He is also a founding member of the Maryland General Assembly Community College Caucus. Before becoming a Senator, Mathias was a member of the House of Delegates from 2006-2011, mayor of Ocean City from 1996-2006, Ocean City council member from 1990-1996 and a member of the board of zoning appeals from 1987-1990.

In addition, Sen. Mathias was a business owner in Ocean City for more than 30 years. He is a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 9053 in Ocean City and a lifetime member of and former chaplain for the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Co.

Sen. Mathias received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

He and his wife, Kathy, have two grown children.
