Registration has begun for Summer Scholars at Wor-Wic Community College. For the best selection of classes, parents of gifted and talented children entering third through ninth grade should register prior to June 1.

New courses being offered this summer include “Cool Contraptions,” “Chunkinology,” “Junk Yard Wars,” “Kids Rock,” “Feasts and Festivals Around the World” and “It’s My Business.”

Other topics include aeronautics, American Girl history, art, chess, computer animation and video game design, cooking, crime scene investigation, digital photography, engineering apprenticeship, geocaching, LEGO robotics, marine engineering, sign language, veterinary science and writing.

The one-week courses are being offered Monday through Friday, beginning July 8. Students can take full- or half-day courses. Full-day courses will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one-hour lunch. Half-day courses, which are offered from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m., can also be taken back-to-back to create a full-day schedule. Before and after care is available at the college’s on-campus child development center.

The courses are designed for public, private and home-schooled gifted and talented students entering grades three through nine in the fall of 2013. A student’s gifted and talented status is determined by the school they attend, based on the student’s outstanding abilities in the areas of general intellectual capabilities, specific academic aptitudes, or the creative, visual or performing arts.
