Tia McArthur of Quantico, a general studies major at Wor-Wic Community College, is this year’s $500 faculty honors scholarship winner.

Selection is based on scholastic achievement and an essay competition judged by the honors program committee at Wor-Wic. Applicants were required to write a four-page research-based argumentative essay that addressed the positive and negative ways that social networking and text messaging is changing the way people relate to each other. McArthur’s award-winning essay called “‘Like’ this Essay: The Benefits of Social Media” covered political, academic and economical effects of social media.

McArthur is an honors student at Wor-Wic and has served as secretary of the student government association and as a student ambassador.

“Being in the close-knit honors program has helped me build confidence with what I am studying and learning by allowing me the opportunity to express how I feel about class discussions and elaborate on ideas without being judged by what I say,” McArthur said. “I am also applying what I have learned in honors to everyday life, not just the classroom.”

McArthur plans to graduate from Wor-Wic in May and transfer to Towson University to major in mass communications with a concentration in public relations.
