Parents of gifted and talented children entering the third through ninth grades in the fall of 2015 can register their children for Summer Scholars courses being offered at Wor-Wic Community College this summer.

New courses being offered include “3-D Printing,” “Curtain Call,” “Eyes to the  Sky,” “Geek Squad II,” “I Like to Move It! — Musculoskeletal Madness,” “Rockets and Robots,” “Scratch That!,” “Star Wars Science” and “Wild About Animals.” Other courses focus on art, chemistry, computer repair, cooking, geocaching, Google Earth, nursing, the science of special effects, stop motion video, veterinary science, virtual travel and weather.

“Each year, we get such positive feedback from the students and their parents,” said Jill Heathfield, director of continuing education and workforce development at Wor-Wic. “The kids tell us how great their experience was and the parents thank us for combatting summer brain drain.”

The one-week courses are offered on campus Monday through Friday, beginning July 6 and ending July 31. Students can take full or half-day courses. Full-day courses are held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a one-hour lunch. Half-day courses, which are offered from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m., can also be taken back-to-back to create a full-day schedule. Before and after care is available at the college’s on-campus child development center.

The courses are designed for public, private and home-schooled gifted and talented students. A student’s gifted and talented status is determined by the school they attend, based on the student’s abilities in the areas of general intellectual capabilities, specific academic aptitudes, or the creative, visual or performing arts.
